Frequently Asked Questions

  • First, check other appliances: a light switch, socket, or gas hob. If they’re also dead, it’s likely a power cut. If it’s just the boiler, inspect your fuse box—has a switch flipped to ‘OFF’? Flick it back on. You might just save yourself a call-out.

  • Your pressure gauge should read between 1 and 1.5 bar. If it's lower, that's likely the problem. Use your filling loop (refer to your manual) to top it up, then hit the reset button on your boiler. It’s a common and often easy fix.

  • Check your thermostat—is it on and turned past 18°C? Try cranking it up to 22°C briefly. Also, check the heating dial on your boiler—it may be turned too low. Lastly, inspect your timer; power blinks or daylight savings changes can mess up the settings.

  • Yes, especially if you’ve got an outdoor condensate pipe. If it's frozen, your boiler may lock out. Gently thaw the pipe with warm water or a hot water bottle—never use boiling water. Then reset the boiler. Problem solved (usually).

  • If you've done all 12 basic checks—power, pressure, thermostat, reset, and so on—and still no luck, it’s time to call a Gas Safe registered engineer. Avoid DIY with gas-related issues. Safety first.

  • Just use emulsion. It’s water-based, low-fume, quick-drying, and easy to clean. Two coats in a day? Done. Anyone telling you to use oil-based paint on walls is stuck in the past—ignore them (and their shoulder pads).

  • Finish matters more than most people realise. Here's your cheat sheet:

    • Bedrooms → Matt (for soft vibes and flaw-hiding).

    • Living rooms → Eggshell (for durability with a warm glow).

    • Kitchens/Bathrooms → Satin (for moisture resistance and scrubbability).
Get it wrong, and you'll be repainting faster than you think.

  • Yes—and in a big way. Cheap paint is thin, patchy, and fades fast. You’ll end up using more coats and repainting sooner. Good paint has more pigment, which means richer colour, better coverage, and longer life. Think of it as spending smart, not just spending more.

  • You can… but don’t bank on it. Paint goes off faster than an avocado—especially once opened. Colours also fade slightly over time, so a fresh patch can stand out more than the original stain. Touch-ups are hit-and-miss. Plan to do full walls, not quick fixes.

  • If you'd rather not spend your weekend wrestling with rollers and dodgy coverage, hire a pro. A good decorator knows the right paint, the right tools, and the right prep. What takes you two days takes them two hours—and it looks better. Hub can sort that for you.
